Why does a storm matter when the grid is already strained?

Storm days show how much daily life depends on things working: roads, transport, clinics and power. The news reports on Vance did not report storm-related power outages. But Los Cabos came into this storm after a very hard summer for the grid.

Semanario ZETA reported on October 27, 2026 that the Centro de Energía Renovable y Calidad Ambiental (CERCA) counted 120 blackouts in summer 2026, mainly in La Paz and Los Cabos. The previous record was almost 70, in 2019. Hotel association EMPRHOTUR president Agustín Olachea Nogueda said there is still no short-term plan for the energy crisis.

New CFE projects are coming: two termosolar plants and an internal-combustion plant for Los Cabos, adding 340 MW to the state, per ZETA. That is real progress. Olachea said these projects could take “three, four, five years” to be installed. Until then, homes and businesses rely on today’s grid, storm season or not.

What does storm-ready solar look like for a Los Cabos home?

A storm-ready setup gives you power you control. There are three main paths, and Cabo Solar Experts designs all of them:

  • Grid-tied solar: panels cut what you buy from CFE. On its own, it shuts off when the grid goes down, for safety.
  • Hybrid solar with battery backup: panels charge a battery, and a hybrid inverter keeps your chosen circuits running when CFE power drops. Learn more in does solar work during outages in Los Cabos.
  • Off-grid solar: the property runs on its own solar and batteries, a good fit for remote lots, ranches and beach homes. Compare options in hybrid vs off-grid solar in Los Cabos.

Cloudy, rainy days still produce some solar energy, and a battery holds what the panels made earlier. Read do solar panels work during Baja’s rainy season for the details.

Why choose a battery instead of a generator?

A battery switches on by itself, runs quietly and does not need fuel deliveries when roads are flooded or closed. On storm days like October 30, when arroyos closed streets and transport stopped, not needing a fuel run is a real comfort. See our full comparison: generator vs battery backup in Baja.

How can businesses in Los Cabos stay ready?

Hotels, restaurants, shops and rentals felt the storm through closed beaches, slow transport and messy streets. A solar and battery system can keep key loads such as refrigeration, Wi-Fi, lighting and point-of-sale running when the grid is down, based on how the system is sized. That helps you keep serving guests and customers.
