CFE Termosolar Plant Los Cabos: What It Means for Your Home Today
Updated October 30, 2026 · By Cabo Solar Experts
The CFE termosolar plant for Los Cabos and La Paz is great long-term news: three 100-meter solar towers with molten-salt storage of up to 15 hours, about 150 MW projected by 2030. But it is years away. Homeowners in Los Cabos can add their own solar and battery backup now, using the same idea: store the sun for after dark.

What did CFE announce for Baja California Sur?
On October 29, 2026, Mexico’s Secretaría de Energía (SENER) and the Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) announced three solar-thermal (“termosolar”) towers for Baja California Sur, as reported by El Cronista. The plant is meant to supply La Paz and Los Cabos steadily, including at night.
- Towers: three central towers, each about 100 meters tall.
- How it works: thousands of sun-tracking mirrors (heliostats) reflect sunlight onto the tower. The heat warms molten salts above 500 °C, which make steam to turn a generator.
- Storage: CFE says the system can store energy for use for up to 15 hours straight, “solving the problem when the sun goes down.”
- Timeline: two stages. The first two towers go near La Paz; a third goes in Ciudad Constitución before 2030.
- Size: a total of 150 megawatts projected by 2030.
According to El Cronista, this would be Mexico’s first termosolar plant, joining the United States and Chile as the only countries in the Americas with towers of this size.
Why does Los Cabos need more power?
Los Cabos and La Paz had a record number of outages this summer. Semanario ZETA reported on October 27, 2026 that the Centro de Energía Renovable y Calidad Ambiental (CERCA) counted 120 blackouts in summer 2026, mostly in La Paz and Los Cabos. The previous record was in 2019, with almost 70.
In the same report, hotel association EMPRHOTUR president Agustín Olachea Nogueda said federal authorities still have no short-term plan for the problem. ZETA notes that the termosolar projects plus a new internal-combustion power plant (CCI) for Los Cabos would add 340 MW of generation to the state. Olachea said these projects could take “three, four, five years” to be installed.

When will the termosolar plant help my home?
Not right away. CFE’s own target for the full 150 MW is 2030, and the people quoted by ZETA expect three to five years for the new plants. That is good news for the region’s future. For the next several summers, though, homes and businesses in Los Cabos still depend on today’s grid.
What does the CFE design teach homeowners?
CFE chose a solar plant with storage, because sunshine alone stops at sunset. The lesson is the same at home: solar panels make power by day, and a battery keeps it ready for the evening and for outages.
A home system works on a smaller scale:
- Daytime: rooftop panels power the home and charge the battery.
- Evening: the battery supplies stored solar energy to the loads in the design.
- Blackout: a properly configured hybrid system keeps the backed-up circuits running from the battery and panels.
How long a battery lasts depends on its size and what you run. That is why Cabo Solar Experts sizes every system from your CFE bill and the loads you want covered, such as lights, fridge, Wi-Fi, pumps or a set number of air conditioners.

What can Los Cabos homes and businesses do now?
Cabo Solar Experts installs three kinds of systems in Los Cabos and Baja California Sur:
- Solar + battery backup (hybrid): stays connected to CFE, lowers how much grid power you buy, and keeps chosen circuits on in an outage. See solar battery backup in Los Cabos.
- Grid-tied solar: reduces CFE bills during the day; it does not give backup without a battery. Learn how net metering works with CFE.
- Off-grid solar: for properties without a reliable grid connection. Compare hybrid vs off-grid solar in Los Cabos.
For rentals and second homes owned by US and Canadian owners, battery backup means guests are not left without lights, Wi-Fi or refrigeration when the grid drops. Read more on whether solar works during outages in Los Cabos and on the best solar batteries for homes in Baja.
How does getting a quote work?
Cabo Solar Experts quotes remotely, with no site visit needed to start:
- Send a photo of your latest CFE bill on WhatsApp.
- Tell us which loads you want during an outage (for example, how many A/C units at night).
- Send photos of your roof, main breaker, meter and the planned battery spot.
- Receive clear options with full equipment specs and a turnkey total.

Frequently asked questions
What is a termosolar plant?
A termosolar (solar-thermal) plant uses mirrors to focus sunlight on a tower. The heat warms molten salt, which makes steam to drive a turbine. CFE says the Baja California Sur plant can store energy for up to 15 hours.
Where will the CFE termosolar towers be built?
According to CFE, as reported by El Cronista, the first two towers will be near La Paz and a third in Ciudad Constitución, to supply La Paz and Los Cabos.
When will the CFE termosolar plant be finished?
CFE projects about 150 MW by 2030. Hotel leaders quoted by ZETA expect the new plants to take three to five years.
How many blackouts did Los Cabos have in 2026?
CERCA counted 120 outages in summer 2026, mostly in La Paz and Los Cabos, per Semanario ZETA. The prior record was almost 70, in 2019.
Will the new plant end blackouts in Los Cabos?
It should add generation and nighttime supply, but it is years away and no one can promise an outage-free grid. A home battery gives you backup on your own property now.
Can home solar work at night?
Panels alone cannot. With a battery, stored solar energy can power the loads in your design after sunset. The same storage idea is behind CFE’s plant.
Does grid-tied solar work during a blackout?
No. A grid-tied system without a battery shuts off when CFE goes down, for safety. A hybrid system with a battery can keep backed-up circuits running.
How long will a home battery last during an outage?
It depends on the battery size and what you run. Cabo Solar Experts sizes the battery from your CFE bill and the loads you choose.
Can I run air conditioning on battery backup?
Yes, when the inverter and battery are sized for it. Tell us how many A/C units you want at night and for how long.
Do I need a site visit to get a quote?
No. Cabo Solar Experts quotes remotely from your CFE bill and photos of your roof, breaker, meter and battery location.
