Los Cabos Power Outages 2026: A Record Summer and What to Do Now
Updated November 3, 2026 · By Cabo Solar Experts
Los Cabos power outages in 2026 hit a record. According to the Centro de Energía Renovable y Calidad Ambiental (CERCA), Baja California Sur had 120 blackouts in summer 2026, mainly in La Paz and Los Cabos, beating the 2019 record of almost 70. New CFE plants are planned but will take years, so homeowners, rentals and hotels are looking at solar and battery backup they can install now.

What did ZETA report about Los Cabos power outages in 2026?
On October 27, 2026, Semanario ZETA reported that hoteliers in Baja California Sur say the state still lacks a short-term strategy for its energy crisis. The key points:
- A record summer. CERCA counted a total of 120 blackouts in summer 2026, mainly in the municipalities of La Paz and Los Cabos. The previous record was 2019, with almost 70 interruptions.
- Hoteliers want action now. Agustín Olachea Nogueda, president of the hotel and tourism business association EMPRHOTUR, said federal authorities still have not set a short-term route to stop a problem that gets worse each year.
- Hopes for announcements. He said the industry expected major energy announcements when President Claudia Sheinbaum visited Baja California Sur in September, but they did not come.
- New plants are coming, slowly. CFE projects for the state include two solar-thermal plants and an internal combustion plant for Los Cabos, together adding 340 MW of generation. ZETA notes they will take up to four years; Olachea said “three, four, five years” to install, and asked for a 15-to-20-year vision.
The good news: you don’t have to wait for the grid to catch up to protect your own property.

What do the outages mean for homes, rentals and small hotels?
A blackout is more than an inconvenience in Los Cabos. For full-time residents and seasonal owners from the US and Canada, it can mean a warm fridge, no Wi-Fi, no pool pump and no A/C. For vacation rentals and boutique hotels, it can mean unhappy guests and stressful nights for staff.
Since CFE’s new generation is still years away, the practical question is simple: what will keep your essentials running during the next outage? We cover the basics in our home backup power plan for Los Cabos and in does solar work during outages?
Why doesn’t regular grid-tied solar keep the lights on?
A standard grid-tied solar system shuts off when the grid goes down. That is a safety rule that protects line workers. To keep power during a blackout, you need a battery and an inverter that can isolate your home from the grid. That’s why we design most systems in Los Cabos as hybrid systems: solar panels plus battery backup.
How Cabo Solar Experts helps you stay powered
1. Solar to take control of your CFE bill
Solar panels produce your own electricity from the Baja sun, so you buy less from CFE. This is timely: Tribuna de México reported that the CFE summer subsidy in Baja California Sur ended October 31, so some November and December bills may rise depending on each home’s tariff and use. High-use homes should also understand the DAC tariff in Los Cabos.
2. Battery backup for outages
A battery stores energy so your chosen circuits keep running when the grid drops: fridge, lights, internet, fans, water pump, security. We size it to what you want to keep on, from a few essentials to most of the house.

3. Off-grid systems for full independence
For properties with weak grid service, or owners who want to rely on the sun alone, we design off-grid systems with enough panels and storage for daily life. Compare the options in hybrid vs. off-grid solar in Los Cabos.
4. Monitoring you can check from anywhere
Many owners split time between Los Cabos and home. System monitoring lets you see production and battery status from your phone, wherever you are.

What should rentals and small hotels think about?
- Guest essentials first: lights, Wi-Fi, fridges, door locks and water pressure.
- Bigger loads: A/C, pool pumps and kitchens need a larger system, so plan them deliberately.
- Peace of mind: a backup system that switches over on its own means fewer late-night calls.
Our team will walk the property, review your CFE bills and design a system around how the space is actually used. Read more lessons from this season in storm-ready solar in Los Cabos and Los Cabos blackouts and battery backup.
FAQ: Los Cabos power outages 2026
How many power outages did Baja California Sur have in summer 2026?
According to CERCA, as reported by Semanario ZETA, there were 120 blackouts in summer 2026, mainly in La Paz and Los Cabos. It is the highest number in the state’s history.
What was the previous record?
2019, with almost 70 interruptions, according to the same report.
When will CFE’s new plants help?
CFE plans two solar-thermal plants and an internal combustion plant adding 340 MW. ZETA says they will take up to four years, and hotel leader Agustín Olachea estimated three to five years.
Will my solar panels work during a blackout?
Only if the system includes a battery and a backup-capable inverter. Standard grid-tied systems shut off when the grid goes down, for safety.
Can a battery run my air conditioning?
It can, if the system is sized for it. A/C uses a lot of power, so we size the battery and solar around the loads you want to keep on.
Is off-grid solar possible in Los Cabos?
Yes. With enough panels and storage, a property can run on solar alone. We’ll help you choose between hybrid and off-grid.
